What is the Core?

A strong core is the foundation goal of all Pilates exercise. The is both a source of
power and a supportive layer of protection, especially for the back.
The core is composed of many layers of muscle wrapping the body from front to back.
Pilates, by strengthening these muscles, helps protect the back, adds strength to all
other muscles and allows muscles to be used for their intended purposes.
The result, for many, is a lower back that is stronger, more protected and feels better.
Pilates clients also notice more relaxation in their neck, shoulders, hips and legs
because the core muscles are removing strain from those areas.

I have a bad back, can I do Pilates?

The answer is, yes, yes, yes. We often see a great improvement
in our clients’ spinal health. With individual attention and the
use of the specialized equipment the teacher can train the client in a way
that stabilizes the spine and strengthens the muscles which support the
spine.

Am I too old to start Pilates?

There is no age restriction with Pilates. Because each session is tailored to
the individual almost anyone at any age can do Pilates. We have children as
young as 5 and adults as old as 90 who have started Pilates and have seen
wonderful results.
As we age we tend to lose balance. Part of the problem is postural and Pilates will
help with this. Part of the problem is a lack of practice. When was the last time you
balanced on a log or walked along the curb? Pilates exercises bring back the practice
of balance in a safe protected way to reactivate those parts of you related to
maintaining your balance.

I am not coordinated, do I need to be?

One of the goals with Pilates is increased body awareness. With this comes
more coordination, improvement of balance and overall strength in the body.
Another part of coordination is flexibility. Pilates creates a
long lean muscle pattern which allows the muscles to function in their
optimal state and therefore increasing coordination.

I have bad knees, can I do Pilates?
Every exercise can be modified so there is no strain on the joints. We
work on stabilizing and strengthening the smaller muscles of the body that
support all our joints through controlled movements.
